The "Cosmonaut" who also became a "Taxi Driver"

The story of Sigmund Werner Paul Jähn as a German pilot who also became the first German to fly to space as part of the Soviet Union's Interkosmos programme is one of those rare incidents in the history of astronauts around the world.

Right: Sigmund Werner Paul Jähn

He was part of the first East German cosmonaut mission in 1978 and then he received a  title as "Hero of the Soviet Union" on September 1978 and he also received a doctorate in physics.

However things didn't work so well for him and after 1990 reunification of Germany, he had a little too much of extra time. Although he was engaged as a freelance consultant for the formerly West German space flight agency called : German Aerospace Center (DLR) but he needed something more to keep himself busy.

He became a taxi driver for a while and it was mentioned that he actually didn't have anything to do since 1990 to 1993. Perhaps due to the economical situation during those years of reunification, he needed more financial support.

This story has been also portrayed in the Movie called: "Good Bye Lenin!" (2003) by German director "Wolfgang Becker".
